According to the ACSM, a recent survey found that More Maternal Physical Activity May Lead to Leaner Pre-Adolescent Children. Approximately 32 percent of United States children are either overweight or obese. The ACSM found that a mother’s current aerobic fitness was inversely related to her child’s body mass index (BMI), percent fatness, and waist circumference at age 8-10 years. The study also shows that mothers who were more aerobically fit during pregnancy had children with lower body size and fat percentage.
This is great news for expecting mothers! By taking action now you can increase the likeliness that your children will be healthier not only in their infancy, but throughout their lives. What an excellent legacy to pass on to our children – healthy habits!
A study, "The Longer You Sit, the Shorter Your Life Span" published in the American Journal of Epidemiology online July 22 studied the effects of sitting in relation to mortality risk. The study found that women who spent six hours a day sitting had a 37% increased risk of dying versus those who spent less that three hours a day sitting. This increased risk was 17% for men. Along with this, people who sat a lot and did not exercise or stay active increased their mortality risk to 94% for women and 48% for men. This study provides us with just one more fact as to why we all should "get up and move"!!!
